What happens when we stop searching for answers where the light is easiest and instead look directly at the causes of suffering? In this Dhamma talk, Bhante Joe explores the Mūlapariyāya Sutta, “The Root of All Things,” and the Buddha’s practical framework of right view, right mindfulness, and right effort. Using the Four Noble Truths, the simile of searching for lost keys under a lamp post, and a story of snorkeling through dark Canadian lakes, he explains how desire shapes our world and how Buddhist practice redirects desire toward its own ending. The talk moves through virtue, restraint, meditation, letting go, and impermanence, showing how attachment makes the mind vulnerable to change. By repeatedly replacing coarser habits with more skillful ones, the path gradually leads toward greater freedom, stability, inner peace, and the end of suffering.
