In this Dhamma talk, Bhante Joe explores how Buddhist practice can help us work wisely with fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. Beginning with an unexpected encounter with an intimidating dog in Sri Lanka, he examines uddhacca-kukkucca—the hindrance of restlessness, anxiety, fear, and remorse—and explains why different kinds of fear require different responses. Acute fear may call for courage, determination (adhiṭṭhāna), and strong effort, while prolonged uncertainty often requires surrender, faith, acceptance, and letting go. Bhante Joe also discusses breath meditation as a practical method for calming discursive thought, relaxing bodily tension, regulating anxious energy, and stepping back from perceptions of the past and future so that difficult situations can be approached with greater clarity, balance, and ease.
