Stopping The Dukkha Machine | A short talk given by Ajahn Dan Thiracitto

What happens when Buddhist practice is tested outside the safety and routine of the monastery? In this retreat Dhamma talk, invited and hosted by Bhante Joe, Bhante Dan reflects on the wandering monk’s life as a direct training in faith, humility, Vinaya, and mindfulness. Drawing on experiences of tudong and piṇḍapāta in Europe and other non-Buddhist settings, he describes how embarrassment, uncertainty, hunger, and fear expose the kilesas and reveal the mind’s habit of turning thoughts into bodily tension and dukkha. He connects this process with dependent origination, vedanā, and the Buddha’s simile of the two arrows, then explains how returning to the breath and felt body can interrupt the cycle. The talk offers practical guidance for meeting discomfort with awareness and deepening Buddhist practice through lived experience.
