About the retreat:
This residential/non‑residential retreat offers practical training in Theravāda Buddhist meditation and is suitable for both beginners and experienced meditators. Over five days you will:
- Explore the basic principles of training the mind.
- Build proficiency in foundational samatha and vipassanā practices across several core meditation themes.
- Learn to select a meditation topic that suits your temperament and situation.
- Identify everyday factors that influence meditation and learn how to streamline them to support practice.
- Connect with a community of fellow practitioners during and optionally after the retreat.
Teacher:
The retreat is led by Bhante Joe, a Canadian Theravāda monk in the Thai Forest Tradition of Ajahn Chah. Ordained in 2010 at Tisarana Buddhist Monastery, he trained both in Canada and at Wat Pah Nanachat in Thailand. Since 2019 he has lived and practised in Sri Lanka. His teaching draws on the suttas and Vinaya and the training methods of the Thai Forest masters.
Venue:
Kalalgoda Vipassana Meditation Centre offers a peaceful residential setting with a main meditation hall and simple accommodation for retreatants, accommodating around 40 participants.
Dana:
This retreat is offered on the principle of dāna (generosity). Food and lodging are provided, and there is no fixed fee.
